The Bible… what’s the point?
People accept testimony - or they don’t. There are ways of fact-checking testimony - or there isn’t. The Bible is testimony from God - or it isn’t. The Bible contains warnings and promises - or it doesn’t. There are serious consequences if we don’t heed the warnings - or there isn’t

Illustration - The Manual. You have been diagnosed with cancer. Your doctor gives you a small manual. He suggests that you read it - it discusses your illness and the treatment that you will be receiving. He recommends that you start reading it - and as you meet with him over the next few months - discussing what you have found to be helpful. The manual has been used by many to provide hope for those diagnosed with cancer. You take you doctor’s advice. You have just purchased a new car or expensive piece of electronic equipment. It comes with a manual. The first part of it is designed a “quick-start guide” covering all the control and what they do. There is a detailed section, which explains how to get the best performance out of your purchase by following a “maintenance schedule.” The manual also contains a cautions section what to do in the case of an emergency, and a 1-800 number to call for support if needed. You just met a special someone, got married, or are anticipating your first child. Wouldn’t it be great to receive a small manual that explains how to have a great relationship, or how to enjoy your marriage and stay that way, or how to be an awesome parent? There is a manual that explains that not only provides “quick start” instructions - but also information in more detail - including warning information and a way of contacting the “Manufacturer” in case of emergency. There is a manual that provides guidance about maintaining relationships between close friends, guidance for those that are married, and instructions to parents. This manual is the Bible. The Bible contains warnings about cancer - the cancer we all have - the spiritual kind. This manual also explains the cure made available by the Doctor - the Great Physician. The Bible provides information from the Manufacturer about what He has created. The Bible also provides information about starting and maintaining relations both with each other and God Himself. When is the last time you spent reading the Bible like it was the most important manual we have - perhaps starting with the Gospel of John?

Why should we care about what the Bible says? All the information on this website, or all the websites in the world, for that matter, cannot prove the truth of the Bible and what it teaches. Nor can research and investigation and evidence prove the Bible is God’s Word. No amount of information can eliminate the need for faith. Information and evidence can open a door to faith, however. They can pave the way for faith. They can remove objections or obstacles to faith. That’s the reason John, one of Jesus’ earliest followers, gave for writing the fourth Gospel, the fourth book of the New Testament. He wrote, “But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life” (John 20:31, NLT). The Bible is an ancient document; there’s no question about that. The Bible is a textually accurate work, more so than any other book in history. The Bible is a historically reliable record, though we can only just scratch the surface in explaining why that’s so. But, ultimately, none of that matters if it doesn’t open a door to faith for you. If you’re hearing or reading these words and you have rejected the Bible without actually reading it, we urge you to read just two percent of it before you dismiss it. If you can read the Gospel of John, 22 chapters in all, without hearing the ring of truth in it, then at least you won’t have made the mistake of reaching your conclusion without prior investigation. Now, if you’re hearing or reading these words and you already believe in the Bible, and even call it the Word of God, but you’re not reading it and letting it change your life, you’re missing the whole point. The Bible is not a mere storybook. Nor is it The New York Times. It wasn’t handed down through the ages as a pipeline for information. It was written “that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31, NIV).

Just because the Bible might be hard to understand does than mean it’s not true? Well, some things like space going on forever are hard to fully comprehend. But just because we don’t fully understand something shouldn’t prevent us from trusting it or using it.

Illustration - Car. Take a car for instance. Have you considered that the gasoline engine really is a controlled bomb? Fuel under pressure ignited starting a chain reaction that results in the car moving. You may be a mechanic and know everything about a car, but most people are not. But not knowing everything about the car doesn’t prevent us from getting in the drivers seat and taking it for a spin, right?

Illustration - Light. Do you understand the physics behind light? You may be a scientist and understand physics. But most people don’t know what a photon is scientifically, but that doesn’t prevent them from using a flashlight.

Illustration - Gravity. We can’t see it, smell it or taste it. But could do an easy test to see if it is real like dropping something off the roof of a tall building. So some things exist, some things are true, even if we can’t “see” them.

What’s’ the Point? Not everything concerning God, the Bible, or Jesus is easy to understand. But just like driving a car or using a flashlight we can make decisions based on what we do understand. There is evidence that God exists. There is testimony that all of us will meet God one day. The day will be great for some, not so good for others. The Bible contains warnings and promises from God.  The Bible warns us that we have all broken God’s law. The Bible warns us that anyone who has not personally received God forgiveness will receive the penalty, which includes separation from God for all eternity. The Bible also contains testimony about Jesus. Jesus is God’s only solution for our problem. Jesus is the means by which we can be forgiven. Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin [breaking God's law] is death [which includes Hell], but the gift of God is eternal life [which includes Heaven] in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Text New King James Version NKJV, Italics added)

Question. Which would you rather have, the gift or the wage?

Is the Bible a Book of History? Yes. It provides the “Big Picture” of History. It tells us … How everything started. How everything is going to end. And in the middle - His-story - Emmanuel - God with us.

Is the Bible a Book of Warning? Yes. The Bible warns us of a problem. A problem we all have. The Bible is also a Book of Promise - a promise that God has provided a solution for our problem. The more important question is, “Will we accept or reject God’s only solution for our problem?” “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, NKJV)

For the really, really skeptical - a final warning.
The Bible you won’t read warns that everyone has broken God’s laws. The Bible you won’t read warns that everyone will get justice. (Unless they surrender to God and ask for mercy.) The Bible you won’t read promises that God has provided a solution to our problem. Maybe it’s time to start reading the Bible.

What is inspiration? Is the Bible inspired by God? (Can we trust the Bible if men wrote it?) Many people marvel at the inspiration of composers and musicians. Others are amazed at the inspiration of playwrights and authors of popular books including fiction. These same people get all upset at the mention of “inspiration” of the Bible. Perhaps it’s not so much about inspiration as to who did the inspiring (in this case God.) 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” Yes, the Bible is inspired of God, He used the pens of many men to write it.

One-Minute Apologist, Dr. Frank Turek
“You’re a man, why should we trust you?”

Does God mean what He says? (In the Bible?) Christian, Do you really believe God meant what He said in the Bible?
The Bible is actually God’s word. 2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21, 1 Thessalonians 2:13. These verses among others claim that the Bible is God’s word.

But how do we know that God’s word is true?  Psalm 119:160, John 17:17, Proverbs 30:5, Ephesians 1:13, Colossians 1:5, Numbers 23:19 - just to name a few. These declare the word of God to be true, the word of truth, the sum of truth, the power of truth, and God cannot lie. Because of that the Apostle Paul declares we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word. (2 Corinthians 4:2a - ESV) So, according to the Bible the Christian’s ultimate standard, God cannot lie, and the Bible is God’s word, and God’s word is truth, and ought not to be tampered with. Now let’s peek at some of the commandments in Exodus 20 to see if He (God) really meant what He said there. Don’t murder - pretty clear - probably meant that one. What about don’t lie? Pretty ironic to be lying about a commandment that forbids lying. Then there’s don’t covet, don’t commit adultery, don’t worship other God’s, honor Mom and Dad. Is there really any confusion about these? Sound like poetry to you? These are the Ten Commandments written directly by God. They aren’t the Ten Songs, Illustrations, or Ten Metaphors, okay? They’re obviously written at face value with clear meaning and purpose. Selah.

But what about other scripture didn’t directly write on special tablets? Well, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures.” Now, which part do you think God didn’t really mean? Which part should we discard because somebody says otherwise? Which part is just metaphysical? Metaphorical? Just a spiritual lesson? Let me go out on a limb and say, “none of it.” Because it’s all true historical stuff.

So what’s my point? What’s the big deal? Well it’s this. The same non-poetic, clear, historical, straight forward style, used to write the Ten Commandments, The Gospels, Paul’s Letters, and most of the other scripture is also used in Genesis 1 thru 11. What’s the point? I’ll tell you. Some Christians think that section of scripture doesn’t mean what it says. I guess because some guys in lab coats told them that the Earth formed over billions of years, and what really happened is completely different than what the Bible teaches. Man’s fallible understanding - trumps God’s infallible word all of a sudden.

So, I guess that God didn’t mean what He said when He had Moses write in the beginning God created the Heaven’s and the Earth, dot, dot, dot, and there was evening and there was morning in six days. Oh, six days. Now that’s the part God must not have meant.

Well, just in case you think that let’s shimmy slid over to the Ten Commandments, which we already established are something that God really meant and take a gander, Exodus 20:11, right dab in the middle of the 4th Commandment, it reads, “For in six days the Lord made Heaven and Earth, the sea and all that is in them.” There it is again, six days. So now what? Are you going to believe that God only meant 9 and ½ of the Ten Commandments?

Careful. Because Jesus said that if you believe Moses you’d believe me (John 5:46). So if you don’t believe God meant what He said in the first few chapters of Genesis, why believe the Ten Commandments? Or the words of Jesus? Or the Gospels? Or the words of Paul? And if you only believe some of it how do you know what to pick and chose? Tamper, Tamper, People.

Now let’s get to the Bread and Butter, here okay?  God could have made the Heavens and the Earth over billions of years, or six seconds, or sixteen hours, or He could have done it by throwing happy dust around, or by pulling it out of a giant hat. But, since He cannot lie, and His word is true, He couldn’t have done it any other way than the way He said He did it. Make sense? So this idea that God didn’t mean what He said, especially when it comes to how and when He created everything has been debunked. Adios.

Is Biblical History recorded in the Chinese Language?
Yes. The Chinese Language (Pictographs) contains inferences to Biblical events recorded in Genesis - creation, the flood, and Babel.

This linguistic analysis of the Chinese language suggests the ancient Chinese were well aware of the God of Abraham. Readers will discover the possibility that the Chinese were a remnant of the Tower of Babel dispersion. The authors start with the observance of some astonishing points of correspondence between certain characters in the Chinese language and elements of the Genesis account of man's early beginnings. They go on to analyze dozens of the ideographic pictures that make up words in the Chinese language. The evidence they compile supports the thesis that the ancient picture writing of the Chinese language embodies memories of man's earliest days. The characters when broken down into component parts reflect elements of the story of God and man recorded in the early chapters of Genesis. Man and woman, the garden, the institution of marriage, the temptation and fall, death, Noah's flood, the tower of Babel they are all there in the tiny drawings and strokes that make up the Chinese characters.

Has Science disproved the Bible? The short answer is “no, science hasn’t disproved the Bible.” But we need to be ready for this question because many people believe that science has in fact “debunked” the Bible. But don’t be intimidated. As Oxford University mathematician, Prof John Lennox said, “Nonsense remains nonsense, even when [spoken] by world-famous scientists.” Expanding on that statement we could say, “Nonsense remains nonsense … even when it’s repeated every day by the media, museum guides, and public school teachers. But to make a dent - it will take strategy, not just facts. Because this particular brand of nonsense is so prevalent, it will not be enough to just trade in facts. We can, for example, present evidence for Creation all day long, and a committed materialist naturalist (Evolutionists) will just keep saying, “Evolution did it.” Or “Nature,” or “It Just Happened.” Such discussions will get old fast. So, what can we do instead? Well, it will take more than one answer to “make a dent” in someone’s Worldview.  But, the heartening news is that God has raised up smart, talented people who are providing ever-better answers and presentations for us to use - like “That’s a Fact” videos from the Institute for Creation Research. These are short, fact-packed videos that can challenge some well-known Evolutionary claims (like “millions-billions” of years). Evolution needs billions of years to work with - it’s easier to imagine impossible events if there is lots of time for them to happen. But if there are no billions of years - the Bible’s explanation of “Origins” is back in the game. After presenting some alternative explanations, we need to pray - pray that the Lord will open the “eyes of the blind” and rescue them.

Is the Bible a Science Textbook? You’ve probably heard the argument before… “You can’t take the Bible seriously when it comes to the creation account, because the Bible is not a science textbook!” First, let’s first address an initial question. Is it true that the Bible is not a science textbook? My answer would be an emphatic “yes!” Are we then justified in believing that it is not trustworthy in all that it conveys? My answer to that question would be an emphatic “no!” If we can’t trust the Bible’s history (which is the backdrop for the Gospel message), then how can we trust its spiritual message? Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, including Genesis. If Moses did not accurately record history, what makes us confident that any of the other biblical writers are trustworthy? It does not make sense that the Holy Spirit could inspire Daniel and the John to accurately prophesy about events hundreds or thousands of years in the future, but was unable to help Moses get it right when conveying details about the past, including the creation of the world. Secondly, it’s actually a good thing that the Bible is not a scientific textbook, because they have to be updated and corrected continually as new information is discovered! Thirdly, even though the Bible is not a science textbook (giving us all the details), it does provide us with a general framework that helps us properly understand astronomy, geology, biology, etc. Let’s look at just a few examples very briefly.

Astronomy. The Bible tells us that God created the Earth on day one and the sun, moon and stars on day four. While this does not give us much detail as to how God created these objects, it does rule out certain possibilities, such as the Big Bang, which posits just the opposite order (i.e. the sun first and millions of years later, the Earth). Also, because God supernaturally created the universe and stars, we wouldn’t necessarily expect that stars just form naturally on their own. In reality, we’ve seen many deaths of stars (i.e. novas and super novas), but we have never truly seen the formation of even a single star. (Some scientists will occasionally refer to the formation of new stars, but all they are seeing is swirling gases and the laws of physics actually mitigate against their natural formation.) Long before we had modern science and telescopes, the Bible stated that the stars are uncountable (Genesis 15:5 & Jeremiah 33:22). What is interesting is that the total number of stars visible to the human eye at any single point on the Earth is about 3,000, so that’s what Moses and Jeremiah would have been able to see at the time they wrote these verses. What they wrote goes against what their senses were telling them. Today, however, with the invention of high powered telescopes, we know that the number of stars is truly uncountable. Scientists estimate there may be about 10 billion billion stars (that’s a 1 with 25 zeros after it!). Imagine trying to count them… getting up to 1,285,621 and then someone distracts you and you have to start all over!

Geology. We see thick layers of sedimentary rock laid down all over the Earth, filled with literally billions and billions of fossils. The Bible gives us a great framework with which to understand the origin of these layers. Genesis 6-8 recounts the great flood of Noah. With an event such as this, guess what we would expect to see? Layers laid down by water all over the earth, filled with fossils (remains of death things).

Biology. Genesis 1 tells us ten times that God created life forms to reproduce “after their kind”. (e.g. Genesis 1:24) This tells us that while we could expect a fair amount of variety, creatures will always only reproduce after their same general “kind” of animal. That’s exactly what we see today. For example, dogs and wolves can actually interbreed, because they are the same general kind of animal. However, dogs and sheep cannot interbreed because they are not the same general kind. There are many other examples, but the main point is that the Bible helps us properly understand the diversity in nature, even though it doesn’t go to the level of detailing all the intricate parts of the cell or other biological aspects.

Conclusion. Although the Bible was not written as a science textbook, we have seen (through many discoveries of modern science) that it does provide an accurate and trustworthy framework with which to properly understand the natural world around us.

Are there Scientists who trust the Biblical Record? Modern science was invented by men who believed in divine creation. In the book “Refuting Evolution”, author Jonathan Sarfati, who has a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, and is a national chess champion, said, “It is fallacious to claim, as many evolutionists do, that believing in miracles means that laboratory science would be impossible. In fact, most branches of modern science were founded by believers in the Bible’s account of creation.” Consider some samples:
Physics - Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Kelvin, Joule
Chemistry - Boyle, Dalton, Ramsay
Biology - Ray, Linnaeus, Mendel, Pasteur, Virchow, Agassiz
Geology - Steno, Woodward, Brewster, Buckland, Cuvier
Astronomy - Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Herschel
Mathematics - Pascal, Leibniz, Euler

While it is true that creationists among scientists definitely constitute a minority, there are many creation scientists, and their number is growing.  The speaking staff of Answers in Genesis includes 10 men and women who have earned doctorates. The Creation Ministries International staff scientists have published many scientific papers in their own fields. Dr. Terry Mortenson of the Creation Museum in America, said, “There are literally thousands of scientists around the world that believe the Bible. There is an organization in the United States with 700 scientists who have a Masters or Ph.D. in the hard sciences.”

What does the Bible have to say about Catastrophism?
While we won’t find the words “uniformitarianism” or “catastrophism” anywhere in the Bible, it is abundantly clear which side it takes on the issue. According to the Bible, the Earth was inundated in a global deluge not many thousands of years ago (Noah’s flood).

Catastrophism is the idea that natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, etc.) can dramatically alter the surface of the Earth very quickly and that we can be certain that at least some of the geological features we see today were formed rapidly during past catastrophes rather than by the slow, gradual processes of uniformitarianism. A catastrophist would look at a canyon with the river running through the bottom and wonder if it was the result rapid catastrophic erosion (like the canyon rapidly formed by the Toutle River washing out a mudslide following the Mt. St. Helens eruption in Washington State).

Uniformitarianism is the idea that geological processes (rates of erosion and uplift, etc.) are essentially the same today as they were in the unobservable past. A strict uniformitarian would look at a canyon with a river running through the bottom and see millions of years of slow, gradual erosion caused by that river.

What does the Bible have to say about Creation vs. Evolution? It is not the purpose of this answer to present a scientific argument in the creation vs. evolution debate. For scientific arguments for creation and/or against evolution, we highly recommend  Answers in Genesis and the Institute for Creation Research. The purpose of this article is to explain why, according to the Bible, the creation vs. evolution debate even exists.  Romans 1:25 declares, “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised. Amen.” A key factor in the creation vs. evolution debate is that the majority of scientists who believe in evolution are also atheists or agnostics. There are some who hold to some form of theistic evolution and others who take a deistic view of God (God exists but is not involved in the world, and everything proceeds along a natural course).  There are some who genuinely and honestly look at the data and arrive at the conclusion that evolution better fits with the data. However, these represent an insignificant percentage of the scientists who advocate evolution. The vast majority of evolutionary scientists hold that life evolved entirely without any intervention of a higher being. Evolution is by definition a naturalistic science. For atheism to be true, there must be an alternate explanation - other than a Creator - for how the universe and life came into existence.  Although belief in some form of evolution predated Charles Darwin, he was the first to develop a plausible model for the process of evolution - natural selection. Darwin once identified himself as a Christian but as a result of some tragedies that took place in his life, he later renounced the Christian faith and the existence of God. Evolution was invented by an atheist. Darwin's goal was not to disprove God's existence, but that is one of the end results of the theory of evolution. Evolution is an enabler of atheism. Evolutionary scientists likely would not admit that their goal is to give an alternate explanation of the origins of life, and thereby to give a foundation for atheism, but according to the Bible, that is exactly why the theory of evolution exists. The Bible tells us, “The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'” (Psalm 14:1; 53:1). The Bible also proclaims that people are without excuse for not believing in a Creator God. “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - His eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). According to the Bible, anyone who denies the existence of God is a fool. Why, then, are so many people, including some Christians, willing to accept that evolutionary scientists are unbiased interpreters of scientific data? According to the Bible, they are all fools! Foolishness does not imply a lack of intelligence. Most evolutionary scientists are brilliant intellectually. Foolishness indicates an inability to properly apply knowledge. Proverbs 1:7 tells us, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Evolutionary scientists mock creation and/or intelligent design as unscientific and not worthy of scientific examination. In order for something to be considered a “science,” they argue, it must be able to be observed and tested; it must be “naturalistic.” Creation is by definition “supernatural.” God and the supernatural cannot be observed or tested (so the argument goes); therefore, creation and/or intelligent design cannot be considered science. Of course, neither can evolution be observed or tested, but that does not seem to be an issue with evolutionists. As a result, all data is filtered through the preconceived, presupposed, and pre-accepted theory of evolution, without alternate explanations being considered. However, the origin of the universe and the origin of life cannot be tested or observed. Both creation and evolution are faith-based systems in regards to origins. Neither can be tested because we cannot go back billions (or thousands) of years to observe the origin of the universe or of life in the universe. Evolutionary scientists reject creation on grounds that would logically force them to also reject evolution as a scientific explanation of origins. Evolution, at least in regard to origins, does not fit the definition of “science” any more than creation does. Evolution is supposedly the only explanation of origins that can be tested; therefore, it is the only theory of origins that can be considered “scientific.” This is foolishness! Scientists who advocate evolution are rejecting a plausible theory of origins without even honestly examining its merits, because it does not fit their illogically narrow definition of “science.” If creation is true, then there is a Creator to whom we are accountable. Evolution is an enabler for atheism. Evolution gives atheists a basis for explaining how life exists apart from a Creator God. Evolution denies the need for a God to be involved in the universe. Evolution is the “creation theory” for the religion of atheism. According to the Bible, the choice is clear. We can believe the Word of our omnipotent and omniscient God, or we can believe the illogically biased, “scientific” explanations of fools.

Are Dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible? The word “dinosaur” which means “terrible lizard”, was coined in 1842, so we won’t find it in the Bible, which comes from historical [older] Hebrew and Greek texts. But that doesn’t mean we won’t find references to dinosaurs in the Bible, we just have to look for different words (like dragon, behemoth, and leviathan). We also need to remember that the Bible wasn’t written as a textbook on dinosaurs, it has a different purpose. Just like we might find some information on specific cars in a DMV handbook for passing a drivers test, but we wouldn't expect to find mechanics diagrams on how to change sparkplugs etc. - that’s not what the driver's handbook is for.  In a similar way the Bible was not written to be a technical guide on dinosaurs.

The Elasmotherium (Elasmotherium sibiricum), or “Giant Unicorn”, is a now-extinct mammal, similar to a modern rhinoceros but much larger and covered in wooly fur. It was up to 26 feet long and had a single horn up to 7 feet, which was sometimes split at the tip. An extremely powerful animal, the little-known elasmotherium is the prime candidate (in my opinion) for the identity of the Hebrew “reem.”. (Source: http://kjv-only.com/unicorn.html)

Did the miracles recorded in the Bible really happen? The miracles of the Bible are to be taken literally. The earliest and most profound miracle of all was that of creation. God created everything “ex nihilo” - from nothing.

The book of Exodus is filled with miraculous events. The plagues on Egypt, beginning with the water of the Nile being turned to blood (Exodus 7:17) through the death of the firstborn of Egypt (Exodus 12:12), were literal events that eventually caused Pharaoh to free the Israelites from bondage. If the plagues did not happen, why did Pharaoh let the people go? Among the best-known Old Testament miracles is the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14), during which Pharaoh and much of his army were drowned.

In the New Testament, Jesus performed numerous miracles. Beginning with His first one at the wedding in Cana where He turned water into wine (John 2:1-10). His most spectacular miracle, of course, was the raising of Lazarus after he had been dead four days (John 11). All the miracles Jesus did were to prove that He was indeed who He said He was - the Son of God. When He calmed the storm in Matthew 8, even the disciples were astonished. If Jesus didn’t really feed thousands of people with a few loaves and fishes, those people remained hungry and Jesus’ words “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill” (John 6:26) have no meaning. But Jesus did heal, He did create food for thousands, He did turn water into wine, and He did raise Lazarus from the dead. John 2:23 tells us that many believed in Him because of the miracles. But not everyone believed. The Bible is to be read and understood literally, including the miracles.

Should we mix the Bible with Evil-Lucion? (Evolution) The short answer is, No. What we you get when you mix Evolution with God’s inspired word? (Theistic Evolution). Taking mans theory without God and mixing it with God’s inspired word is insulting to God. and dangerous to our spiritual health.

How can we respond to Biblical Objections? Let's consider the following... “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

God Cannot Lie (Numbers 23:19, Titus 1:2, Hebrews 6:18)
Source: Can God lie? Got Questions, http://www.gotquestions.org/can-God-lie.html

God is sovereign, meaning He is supreme. Nothing in creation can thwart His purposes (Psalm 93:1; 95:3; Jeremiah 23:20). The eternal God is holy (Isaiah 6:3). His holiness makes it impossible for Him to lie, for by “holy” is meant that God is absolute, transcendent purity. He does not conform to the standard; He is the standard. This means that God’s Word, the Bible, is completely trustworthy (1 Kings 8:56; Psalm 119:160).
Source: Is God sovereign (in control)?, Got Questions, http://www.gotquestions.org/attributes-God.html

Let's now consider how what we have read so far can be used to answer some common objections

What does it mean that the Bible is inspired? (God used men to write our His thoughts to us). Is the Bible really God's Word? (God communicated to us, and men wrote it down). Is the Bible really all that accurate? (Shouldn't the Bible be accurate if God is in control - of the writing - and cannot lie). Does the Bible contain errors, contradictions, or discrepancies? (Same response as above). Has the Bible been corrupted, altered, edited, revised, or tampered with? (Same response as above). Final Objection - Why should I even care about the Bible? Because... The Bible provides a Warning from God. All of us have a problem - We have broke God's law and there is a Day of Justice coming for those who have broken His law.  The Bible also provides a Promise from God. God has provided a solution to our problem, that He will accept - Jesus.

What do we say to people who don't believe the Bible is God's word? There is no easy answer to this question because it depends on the person and the situation.  No single answer works every time.  Therefore, we must first ask questions and discover what the person believes before you start defending the Bible.  Ask if the person is an atheist, a Muslim, a skeptic, or an agnostic.  Ask if he believes in evolution, aliens, or nothing.  Ask if the person believes in God.  If so, which kind?  Does he believe that God is in us all, or that God is part of the universe, or if God is a personal being.  We have to ask questions before we begin teaching.  We must first find out what the person's assumptions are and then tackle those assumptions.  We must prepare the ground before planting the seeds.  See if the person's assumptions are logical or not.  See if they agree with the facts concerning history, the Bible, Christianity, or other topics.  Find out if the person is just being difficult or actually wants to talk.  All of these things are important and affect how the conversation will go. Take an atheist, for example.  He doesn’t believe the Bible is the word of God because he doesn't believe in God.  So, you first have to discuss the issue of God’s existence.  A Muslim, on the other hand, believes in a god but will undoubtedly bring up alleged contradictions in the Bible in an attempt to discredit it.  A Hindu might not even know what the Bible really is.  A Buddhist really doesn't believe in a God, so that is a hurdle you’d have to get over.  You must ask questions to find out about the person.  Here’s a brief outline that might help to do this

Ask about the person's beliefs. Do they believe in God or not? If the person does not believe in God, then you should discuss this before getting to the Bible. If the person believes in God, then ask what religion the person is. (Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Mormon, etc.)

Ask why the person does not believe the Bible is the word of God. Ask “why” to the answer.  Sometimes it is good to repeat the answer in the form of a question.  For example: If the person says the Bible has contradictions, ask, “Why do you believe the Bible has contradictions?” or “Do you have any examples of contradictions?” If the person gives you some, then examine the texts to see if it really is a contradiction.  If you don't know the answer, say you don’t, do some research, and provide the answer later. If the person says he just doesn’t believe it is God’s word but doesn’t have any real reason, then ask “Why not?  Do you have any solid reasons for this?”

Listen to the answer and ask more questions.  Learn more. Examine the answers given to you to see if they are illogical, inaccurate, or emotional. Illogical:  Sometimes a person’s criticism of the Bible is not rational.  For example, someone might say that the Bible can’t be God’s word because it is ancient.  But being ancient doesn't mean it isn’t from God. Inaccurate:  Sometimes people have inaccurate information about the Bible.  For example, someone might say that it is nothing more than fictional stories, or that it has been changed so much it can’t be trusted.  But the truth is that it is not fiction and it has not been changed. Emotional:  Sometimes people just hate religion, God, or anything that imposes morals.  Other times people hate the idea that Jesus is God in flesh, or that He is the only way to salvation.  Emotions must not be brushed aside.  Listen to their responses and gently correct and point people to God.
